Haverhill Community Rises to New Heights

Hellenic Society "Paideia" Promotes Hellenism in South Florida

The Society is establishing a physical presence of Hellenism at Florida Atlantic University. A prime parcel of land, at the main complex of the university, was allocated to us in order to build a 14,000 square foot complex, the Hellenic Society Paideia "Aristotle Center," and an outdoor classical theater. The center will not only give identity to the Classical Studies Program, but will also provide classroom space for courses taught in the department, office space, conference space, a library, a museum, and an exhibition area, as well as a  Greek Orthodox chapel, the Transfiguration, that will represent the Byzantine era of Hellenism. Father Constantine Newman is New Pastor of Annunciation Church in Dover


Father Constantine converted to Orthodoxy in 1988 while he was a Professor of Classics at the University of Hawaii. He and Presbytera Anna had met while studying together at the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae in Munich, Germany, in 1984 and they married in 1985. Complete Story

Sarbanes/Marudas Scholarship Established; Jersey City Native Is First Recipient

The Board of Trustees of the American College of Greece hosted a dinner in Washington, DC on October 19 to acquaint the Washington community with the 125-year old institution located in Athens, Greece. At the dinner President John Bailey announced the establishment by Marilyn and Emanuel Rouvelas of the Sarbanes/Marudas Scholarship in honor of Senator Paul Sarbanes and Peter Marudas, retired Chief of Staff for Senator Sarbanes. The first recipient is Despina Tsalavoutis, of Jersey City, New Jersey, who moved to Greece several years ago. Complete Story.

Christine Kondoleon Appointed George D. and Margo Behrakis Curator of Greek and Roman Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) is pleased to announce that Christine Kondoleon has been appointed the Museum's first-ever Greek and Roman Curator. A position in the Department of Art of the Ancient World, this important curatorial post was recently endowed by MFA Overseer George Behrakis and his wife Margo of North Tewksbury, Massachusetts. Assumption Church Now Under Construction

At last, after two years of planning, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church will build its new Byzantine-style church in Dracut. The new church will replace a historic building in downtown Lowell that was devastated by fire in April, 1999. Read more about it.
