Concerts to Mark Friendship Between Turkey and Greece
The amity between the two neighboring countries Turkey and Greece is set to be strengthened through the “Turkish-Greece Friendship Concerts.” The Athens State Symphony Orchestra will perform concerts scheduled both in Istanbul and Athens together with the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet Orchestra and the programs of both orchestras consist of works
by Turkish and Greek composers as part of the event organized jointly by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet and Athens State Symphony Orchestra. The Athens State Symphony Orchestra will perform today at the Atatσrk Culture Center under the baton of Byron Fidetzis. Born in Thessalonica, Fidetzis studied cello at the State Conservatory in Greece. He has conducted Greek Symphony Orchestras, appearing so far in Austria, Egypt, Bulgaria, Brazil, Germany, Yugoslavia, Italy, Cyprus and Poland in addition to Turkey. He taught at the Music Department of the University of Athens from 1991 to 1993 and he has been teaching at the Ionian University since 1996 in Corfu of Greece. The first concert of the series was performed on Tuesday by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet Orchestra under the direction of Selman Ada at the Atatσrk Culture Center accompanied by soloist Rah'lanGσvenner. The concert showcased pieces by prominent Turkish composers such as Adnan Saygun, Ferit Tσzσn and Cemal Erkin as well as Greek composer Manolis Kalomiris. The concerts will be repeated on Jan. 12 at the Megaron Concert Hall of Athens where the pieces from Alexandra Mouzas and Robert Schumann will also be performed, reported the Anatolia news agency.
