Nation's First Hellenic Genealogical Workshop Held in New Hampshire

(HCS) Portsmouth, NH--Hellenic Historical and Genealogical Association (HHGA) held a successful workshop titled, "Introduction to Hellenic Genealogy," at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Dover, New Hampshire on Saturday, September 21, 2002.

Nearly 50 participants from throughout the state attended this workshop, led by Mary Papoutsy, the founder of HHGA. The first of its kind in the U.S., this session was designed to introduce researchers to Hellenic genealogy. Participants learned about methods of Greek transliteration and causes of variant English-language surnames, Greek patterns of naming, decoding Greek handwriting, using Orthodox ecclesiastical records, and completing pedigree charts. Addressing participants, Papoutsy listed two key goals for Hellenic genealogical research in the U.S.: "finding the original, full Greek name of one's immigrant ancestor," and "obtaining the name of one's ancestral village."

Sponsors of this workshop were Hellenic Historical and Genealogical Association, the Christos and Mary Papoutsy Charitable Foundation, and Rock of Ages granite company. Richard Kimball, an executive with Rock of Ages, provided free genealogy workbooks and fan charts for all participants. Hellenic Historical and Genealogical Association offered research articles and materials prepared by Mary Papoutsy.

Founded in 2000, HHGA was formed to promote the importance of Greek ancestry and history. This non-profit group seeks to provide educational resources and support for research in Hellenic genealogy and history. Publications, lectures, conferences, and volunteer projects are among the activities of this group. Membership is free and open to all interested persons.
