School to Open Its Doors in Wilmington


Leading Greek American Association Sponsors Opening of
Charter School and Program.

Gus J. James, II, President of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), the nation’s leading association for American citizens of Greek heritage, announces the historic opening of Odyssey; Delaware’s first Greek language immersion and mathematics focused charter school. According to school officials, studies show that the method of teaching children in a language immersion program helps them develop a higher level of learning and problem-solving skills.

What: Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Why: To recognize the opening of Delaware’s most unique and innovative offering in public education, as a Greek language immersion and mathematics focused charter school, for children from Kindergarten to the 5th grade.

When: Monday, June 12, 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Where: Odyssey Charter School, 3821 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington, Delaware, 19805.

Event Highlights Include:

AHEPA National President, Gus J. James, II, will speak about AHEPA’s ongoing involvement and commitment to such community service-based programs as charter schools.

New Castle County Executive Chris Coons, State Representative Joe Miro, State Legislator David Sokola School District Superintendent Dr. Robert Andrzejewski, Councilman William Tansey and other local and state officials to present tributes to school.

The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) is the largest and oldest American-based, Greek heritage grassroots membership organization. Its scope is international with chapters in the United States, Canada, Greece, and Cyprus, and "sister" chapters in Australia and New Zealand under the auspices of AHEPA Australasia. AHEPA was founded on July 26, 1922 in response to the evils of bigotry and racism that emerged in early 20th century American society. It also helped Greek immigrants assimilate into society. Today, AHEPA brings the ideals of ancient Greece, which includes philanthropy, education, civic responsibility, and family and individual excellence to the community.
