Cambridge, MA (16 Sep 1998)—The Greek Institute will host a special reception and presentation on Wednesday evening, October 7, 1998, as part of the ongoing Professor John C. Rouman Classical Lecture Series. The reception will honor Professor Rouman, namesake of the lecture series created in 1997 by the Christos and Mary Papoutsy Charitable Foundation. The reception, open to the public, begins at 7:30pm.

Highlights of the evening include a presentation by Professor Rouman entitled, Nicephorus Bryennius and Anna Comnena: The "Roman" Xenophon and Thucydides of eleventh and twelfth century Constantinople. Following Professor Rouman's talk, special guest, Mr. Carroll Wales, a well-known expert in art restoration, will speak about his work at the Monastery Church of St. Catherine's at Mt. Sinai. He will be presenting slides of his work at St. Catherine's from his own collection.

A former Fulbright Scholar in Byzantine Greek, Dr. Rouman, Professor at University of New Hampshire, has won the prestigious National Award for Excellence in Teaching of Classics, and the Distinguished Teaching Award from UNH. He is currently completing the translation and commentary on the History of Nicephorus Bryennius, as well as a modern Greek textbook called Greek: The Living Language.

Carroll Wales, who received his training in art and archeology at Harvard and Yale Universities, worked under the auspices of The Byzantine Institute of America to help restore the mosaics and icons in Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. In 1959, Carroll Wales, along with Costa Tsaousis was chosen to save that great mosaic of the Transfiguration in the Monastery Church of St. Catherine.
