UNH Welcomes Filmmaker Michael Wood for Tenth Anniversary of Rouman Classical Lecture Series
(October 8, 2007 Durham, NH)--The University of New Hampshire welcomes Emmy-nominated British filmmaker Michael Wood as part of its 10th anniversary celebration of the John C. Rouman Classical Lecture Series.

New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch has designated the fourth week of October 2007 as Classics Week in New Hampshire in honor of the 10th anniversary of the John C. Rouman Classical Lecture Series. UNH will hold a series of events as part of its celebration of the lecture series Oct. 23-26, 2007. The celebration culminates with the John C. Rouman Classical Lecture, "The Point of the Classics: The Enduring Image of Greece" by Wood. All events are open to the public.

“Wood is an exhilarating speaker who, in person and on film, brings the past to life again, passionately showing the interconnections between the ancient and medieval worlds and our own. Ancient Greece has been a continual source of inspiration for him, and the university is pleased to have him on campus to share his love of the classical world,” said Stephen Trzaskoma, Associate Professor and coordinator of UNH Ancient Greek Program.

For the past decade, the Rouman Lecture has brought world-famous speakers to the state to talk about all aspects of the ancient world. The series began in 1997 with a grant from the Christos and Mary Papoutsy Charitable Foundation. The series is named after one of the university's most distinguished members of the faculty, John C. Rouman, who taught for decades at UNH and served as the chair of the Classics Program.

Topics explored by the series have covered a range of subjects within Greco-Roman civilization, including mythology, literature, history, art, philosophy, and language, and feature lectures delivered by internationally recognized speakers and scholars.

With more than 70 documentary films to his credit, Wood is the writer and host of many critically acclaimed series on PBS, including “Art of the Western World,” “Legacy,” “Conquistadors,” “Shakespeare” and “In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great.” More than a dozen of his films have focused on Greek history, among them the Emmy-nominated “In Search of the Trojan War.” New Hampshire Public Television will air Woods' Myths Series in advance of Classics Week, beginning Monday, Oct. 8.
